Backseat Drivers: Volume 44

This Sprint Cup season has seen several drivers earning laps back the old-fashioned way: they raced for them.  Should the Lucky Dog be stopped because of this?

Arianne:  How quickly can I say, "Yes"?  I didn't like it from the start.  The very first time they implemented the rule, Ryan Newman won at Dover after being the first recipient of the Lucky Dog.  Nothing against Newman, it just didn't feel right then and it still doesn't now.  The rule was implemented after Dale Jarrett came close to injury when a competitor raced back to the line under caution.  Enforcing stiffer penalties for such actions could create safer racing without the use of the Lucky Dog.  How about 100 points and $100,000 fine?

Kris:  I think like every change in NASCAR, people were skeptical of the Lucky Dog rule at first, but now I think they like it. I wouldn't want to see it discontinued. I think it makes for another race within the race. I know for one- I'm always watching to see who is in line to get it when a caution comes out and I'm often rooting for a caution to fall just before my favorite drivers are about to get lapped or just after they do. Keep the Lucky Dog!

Kimmie:  I dislike the Lucky Dog and would love to see it go away.  Too many drivers focus on being the first car a lap down instead of pushing to better their position by racing for it.  I say it is time for it to go to the doghouse.

Brianna:  Some of us don't remember the old-fashioned way.  However, if that means if you were a lap down then you have to catch up, then, yes, I am all for it.  Why did someone get a lap down anyway?  I think the leader is leading for a reason and the person a lap down is there for a reason.  I never understood how a racer could get a lap back just because.   That always didn't sit well with me or with a race leader.  I guess the national audience and TV cameras had something to do with the Lucky Dog.

Heather:
I don't think the Lucky Dog should be stopped. I think it's a great way for teams who may get behind in a race to have a chance to
catch back up. It also puts in a race within a race, as there are guys racing for the top spot and there are others racing to be the first car
one lap down. It makes strategy come into play a lot more than it would if the Lucky Dog wasn't available to drivers. Personally if the Lucky Dog didn't happen, then many of the races would end with only a few drivers on the lead lap, which would make for a boring race.

Reader Response:

I would like to go back to the old way too!  The field is frozen in position with the caution.  If you are the so-called Lucky Dog, you will be lined up beside the leader on the re-start.  Race your way back to the lead lap.
