BACKSEAT DRIVERS VOLUME 50
Tony Stewart announced he was leaving Gibbs at the end of the year. He is joining forces with Haas Racing. What is your opinion on his move?
Backseat Drivers Volume 50 RACE FAN RESPONSE: Also, Tony has proven he can attract the best in NASCAR. I refer to Ryan Newman here. So now all he has to do is fill in with other top-drawer personnel. As time goes on, we will all be stunned at top talent that abandons other organizations to jump on the Stewart bandwagon. When that happens, you have all the ingredients for both Stewart and Newman to come out of the chute as championship caliber teams. If not, I'd like for some brilliant analyst to tell me why. Kyle Busch came to a new team (not a Chase contender) and new crew chief, a new organization and new brand of car, even to Gibbs. Right off the bat, he is killing the field. There's no practical reason Smoke can't make the same thing happen with Stewart-Haas. Particularly, given the likely fact that Big Brother France will level the playing field by taking the extra horsepower out of Toyota mills. When that happens, there's no practical reason Smoke and Newman won't run consistently at least as well as Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Smoke will have the right stuff. You can quote me on that. Tony Stewart announced he was leaving Gibbs this year to form his own raceteam with Hass. What is your opinion on his move?
Maryann: If there is any driver out there that can pull off being a owner/driver it will be Tony Stewart. Tony has always impressed me as a hands on person. I think the first few years will be rough. Most likely there might be a win or two but not like what he has had in the past. Mr. Stewart will have one busy off season this year. You never know how he will surprise us in the next few months. He is one smart business man, just take a look at the tracks that he owns. I have been to Eldora and he has done a lot out there. So Good Luck Tony.
Sheree: My thoughts are my opinion only...but I feel that their team will be excellent. I also think that by the following year it will be "Tony Stewart Racing", not Stewart-Haas Racing. I think that Tony is an excellent entrepreneur and taking on this venture will honestly be the most precious thing he can do for himself!
Arianne: I think it is a gutsy move. If any driver can make the driver/owner combination work, Tony can do it. However, it will be interesting to see how he deals with running in the back of the pack while the team grows. The move made sense for him. I would rather see him do this than retire only to un-retire two or three times.
It's a given that Stewart-Haas will have the best equipment available to any team in Cup- - Hendrick motors and chassis and a brand new state-of-the-art garage.
